Comprehensive care of the oncology patient requires extensive knowledge beyond CDT. In order to effectively treat an oncology patient with lymphedema, we must also have a clear understanding of the patients’ cancer experience (type of cancer, stage, grade, side effects of specific surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, biotherapy, targeted therapy and hormonal therapies) as well as effectively perform differential diagnostics and identify oncologic emergencies. This course dives into the specifics of the cancer experience, providing opportunity to treat the whole patient. You will learn new manual skills and interventions to combine with CDT to effectively treat the musculoskeletal, soft tissue and scar tissue restrictions that simultaneously occur with a person going through cancer treatment. Advanced lymphedema training will be provided for complex conditions of head and neck cancer, breast, truncal and genital lymphedema, as well as treatment of lymphedema for people with active cancer. A certificate of achievement will be awarded to participants who pass a written exam of 70% or above, demonstrate competency in manual lymphatic skills, and complete a plan of care for a complex oncology case study. Feedback will be provided during supervised labs for evaluation techniques, manual lymphatic drainage, other manual techniques and therapeutic exercises.
